Mentor
Industrial Labor Relations - Cornell University

I’m Rylee, a freshman in Cornell’s ILR School with a background that blends leadership, community service, research, and hands-on work experience. I’ve spent the past few years exploring everything from policing and emergency management to special education, animal research, and competitive riding. I’ve led over two hundred cadets as my high school’s JROTC Battalion Commander, completed more than 360 volunteer hours, interned at the Rehoboth Beach Police Department and Beebe Hospital, and now work as a research and lab assistant for Cornell’s study on aging sled dogs. I also support students with diverse needs as a special education paraprofessional during school breaks. I love helping others figure out their path, whether it’s college decisions, majors, applications, or balancing work and school. I’m here to share honest advice, real experience, and anything I’ve learned along the way.

Extracurriculars

Rehoboth Beach Police Station
During my senior year, I interned at the Rehoboth Beach Police Station, where I assisted officers and staff with daily operations, observed patrol procedures, and handled basic administrative tasks. I spent time learning how reports are filed, how calls are handled, and how officers coordinate during busy periods. I also gained firsthand insight into community policing by observing how the department interacts with residents, responds to incidents, and keeps the town safe.
InternWork Experience or Internship
Beebe Hospital
During the summer between my junior and senior years, I interned with Emergency Management at Beebe Hospital, where I assisted with preparedness planning, reviewed safety protocols, and organized training materials for staff. I learned how the hospital coordinates resources during crises, supported inventory checks of emergency supplies, and sat in on meetings outlining response procedures for various scenarios. The experience gave me a close look at how a healthcare system plans, communicates, and adapts to keep patients and staff protected during emergencies.

Cornell University
I work as a research and lab assistant for the Cornell study on aging retired sled dogs, where I help care for the dogs and support the research team’s daily operations. I lead structured play sessions for 16 dogs, handle feeding routines, and keep their cages and fields clean. I also administer medications as directed, record and track behavioral and health data, and assist with ongoing tests that examine how aging affects performance, mobility, and cognition in retired sled dogs.

I work as a special needs paraprofessional, a role I first held during the summer before my freshman year at Cornell and now continue as a substitute during school breaks. I assist teachers with classroom routines, document student behavior, complete progress reports, and help prevent or de-escalate conflict. I teach academic lessons to small groups of 4 to 7 students with diverse needs while adapting activities to each student’s abilities. I also focus on building an inclusive environment by encouraging cooperation, understanding, and respect among students with different learning and behavioral challenges.

As Battalion Commander in my high school’s JROTC program, I oversaw daily operations, led training, coordinated events, and guided more than a hundred cadets through drills, inspections, and leadership development. Equestrian
I’ve ridden horses competitively for over 10 years in jumping, eventing, and hunter jumpers, gaining experience with both training and show environments. I’ve helped train horses of different skill levels, led summer camps for younger riders, and taught foundational riding skills and barn safety. I currently ride on Cornell’s club dressage team, continuing to build discipline, precision, and connection with each horse I work with.
